The short version: We collect only what we need to create your product. Your family tree file is processed and then permanently deleted — we never store it. We don't sell your data, share it with third parties, or use it to train AI models. You have full rights to request, correct, or delete your information.

1. Who This Policy Covers

This Privacy Policy applies to all visitors and customers of Origentum, LLC ("Origentum," "we," "us," "our") at www.Origentum.com. By placing an order or using our website, you agree to the practices described here.

If you are a resident of California, the European Union, or the United Kingdom, please see the additional rights sections below.

2. What Information We Collect

Information Collected Automatically

Our website may collect standard web analytics data such as browser type, operating system, pages visited, and referral source. This data is aggregated and anonymized; it is not linked to your identity. We use this data only to understand how our website is used and to improve the customer experience.

We use cookies for basic website function. We do not use tracking cookies for behavioral advertising.

Payment Information

Payment is processed through Stripe, Inc., a PCI-compliant payment processor. Origentum never receives, stores, or has access to your credit card number, CVV, or full card details. Stripe's Privacy Policy governs the handling of your payment information.

3. The GEDCOM File — Special Handling

A GEDCOM file can contain personal information about many family members — including living relatives. We treat this data with the highest level of care:

Your GEDCOM file is transmitted securely and used only to extract relevant ancestor records for your specific order.
It is not stored in a database, archived, indexed, or backed up after processing.
It is not shared with any third party.
It is not used to train AI models, now or in the future.
Once your document is generated, the file and all extracted raw data are permanently deleted.

4. How We Use Your Information

We use the information you provide exclusively to:

Create and deliver the narrative document(s) you ordered
Communicate with you about your order (confirmation, delivery, support)
Send follow-up emails related to your order (e.g., order updates, product completion)
Respond to questions or support requests you send us
Improve our products and research engine (using anonymized, aggregated patterns — never linked to you personally)
Comply with legal obligations

We do not use your personal information for targeted advertising, behavioral profiling, or any purpose not listed above.

5. Who We Share Your Information With

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information.

We share data with the following third parties only as necessary to operate our service:

OpenAI — Our AI narrative engine sends anonymized ancestor details and historical context (not your name or email) to OpenAI's API to generate the document text. OpenAI's Privacy Policy applies to this data. We use the API (not the consumer product) — your data is not used by OpenAI to train their models under current API terms.
Stripe — Payment processing only. See Section 2.
Google (Google Docs / Google Drive) — Delivered documents are created in Google Docs. The document is generated in a Origentum-owned Google Drive and a link is sent to you. Google Workspace's Privacy Policy applies.
Email service provider — Your email address and order details are used to send you your document and order communications.

We do not share your data with genealogy databases, ancestry platforms, marketing brokers, or any other third party.

6. Data Retention

We retain order records (ancestor details, customer name and email, order information) for a period of three years for business and accounting purposes, unless you request earlier deletion (see Section 8). GEDCOM files and extracted raw data are deleted upon document generation, as described in Section 3.

7. Data Security

We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including:

Secure HTTPS transmission for all form submissions
Access to order records restricted to Origentum personnel
Payment processing outsourced entirely to PCI-compliant Stripe
GEDCOM files not persisted to long-term storage

No method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your information, we cannot guarantee absolute security.

8. Your Rights

Regardless of where you live, you have the following rights regarding your personal information:

Right to Access Request a copy of the personal information we hold about you and your order.

Right to Correction Ask us to correct inaccurate information associated with your order.

Right to Deletion Request that we delete your personal information and order records, subject to legal retention requirements.

Right to Object Object to our processing of your information for purposes beyond order fulfillment.

Right to Portability Request your data in a structured, machine-readable format.

Opt-Out of Marketing Unsubscribe from marketing emails at any time via the unsubscribe link in any email, or by contacting us directly.

9. California Residents — CCPA Rights

If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) grants you additional rights:

Right to Know — You have the right to know what categories of personal information we collect, use, disclose, and sell (we do not sell personal information).
Right to Delete — You may request deletion of personal information we have collected from you, subject to certain exceptions.
Right to Opt-Out of Sale — We do not sell personal information. There is nothing to opt out of.
Right to Non-Discrimination — We will not discriminate against you for exercising your privacy rights.

10. European Union and United Kingdom Residents — GDPR Rights

If you are located in the EU or UK, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or UK GDPR applies to your data. Our legal basis for processing your personal information is:

Contract performance — Processing your order requires us to use your information to create and deliver the product.
Legitimate interests — Maintaining order records for accounting and legal compliance.
Consent — For any marketing communications, which you may withdraw at any time.

Your GDPR rights include access, correction, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability, and the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. To exercise these rights, email Linda@Origentum.com.

Note: Origentum is a U.S.-based company. By using our services, you consent to the transfer of your information to the United States, where data protection laws may differ from those in your country.

11. Children's Privacy

Our services are not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe we have inadvertently collected information from a child, please contact us immediately and we will delete it.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy periodically. We will post the updated policy on this page with a revised "Last Updated" date. For material changes, we will make reasonable efforts to notify customers by email. Continued use of our services after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
